Cricket : New One day rules introduced

ICC has introduced some new rules for One day internationals, supposed to be introduced from 1st October but introduced from September 29th, 2007 to avoid mid series confusion with respect to the India-Australia Series starting on September 29th with a first one day being played in Bangalore.
Ironically this first One day match was washed off by rain.

  • Free hit has been introduced for front-foot no balls.
  • A mandatory change of ball after 35 overs of each innings.
  • An additional fielder permitted outside the inner circle in second and third power play.
  • If number of overs are reduced in a match, number of power play overs will be reduced proportionately.
  • Boundaries square of wicket must be minimum of 150 yards (earlier 140 yards) with minimum on one side of 65 yards and straight boundaries must be minimum of 70 yards (earlier 60 yards).
  • The match referee has final say in awarding a match to a side in the event of the other side refusing to play.
  • Umpires can impose time wasting penalty if a new batsman is not ready to face his first delivery within two minutes of fall of previous wicket.
